There are a plethora of reasons why nature-deficit disorder is quickly becoming a trending topic. This unofficial diagnosis is one way that experts communicate the problems associated with poor urban planning, reliance on technology, and a diminishing emphasis on time spent outdoors. Unfortunately, all of these are harmful to both adults and children alike, but there are ways to combat this ever-growing problem.

A lack of sunlight is one reason people are susceptible to seasonal affective disorder, which may cause the moods and mental state of an individual to worsen. This typically occurs during winter months in cold areas that receive significant amounts of snowfall or rain due to limited sun exposure. A few ways you can increase your family's health through natural light include: turning on a desk lamp by day instead if relying solely on overhead lighting; adding more windows so there are at least two square feet per person (ideally four); installing skylights for rooms with low ceilings; checking curtains' UV protection levels before buying them- think about how long they will be exposed each time it’s sunny out.
